This place has long been known as the residence of a flock of up to tens of thousand storks and night herons.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, hands over the certificate recognizing Stork Island as a national relic and famous beautiful site to the Party organization and people of Thanh Mien district

Thanh Mien district authorities (Hai Duong) on November 16 morning held the reception of a certificate recognizing Dao Co (Stork Island) as a national relic and famous beautiful site.

In attendance were Mr. Pham The Duyet, former Standing Member of the Politburo, former Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front's Central Committee; Mr. Vu Van Son, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; and Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

The national relic and famous beautiful site of Stork Island is located on the surface of An Duong lake in Chi Lang Nam commune (Thanh Mien district), about 35km to the south of Hai Duong city. This place has long been known as the residence of a flock of up to tens of thousand storks and night herons.

Stork Island is classified as a high level of biodiversity which has been conserved almost intact. Thanks to locals' strict and voluntary protection, the ecosystem around the lake is always kept stable, enabling creatures to continue coming to nest, raising its level of biodiversity.

In addition to storks, night herons, and some valuable and rare bird species on the island, An Duong lake is also the habitat of several fish listed in Vietnam's Red Book.

With rich resources, the national relic and famous beautiful site of Stork Island has high potential to become an aggregate tourist area with the products of historical and spiritual travel, festivals, cuisine, scientific research on ecology and environment, trade villages, etc.

A community-based tourism activity on Stork Island held by the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism

The provincial authorities have defined Stork Island as an eco-tourism area in the "Master plan for tourism development in Hai Duong province by 2020" and approved the "Detailed plan for the construction of Stork Island eco-tourism area in Chi Lang Nam commune, Thanh Mien district" with the total budget amounting to hundreds of billion dong.

The national relic and famous beautiful site of Stork Island is being gradually expanded. The tree planting area for birds to reside exceeds 7,000m2. Environmental education centers, botanical and biological gardens as places for pupils and students in and outside the province to visit, learn, and research on environmental science have been built in schools, etc.. The community-based tourism model is being perfected. Efforts are being made for 30 households to have rooms for homestay tourists and be able to provide in-home services by 2015; main tourism routes to be put into practice; 200 local laborers to be trained in community-based tourism knowledge, 200,000 turns of visitors to be attracted annually with a total revenue of around VND50 billion, etc.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, asked specialized agencies and the local governmental authority to effectively implement the planning and community-based tourism development project for Stork Island tourism area that had been approved by the Provincial People's Committee; build and develop the national relic and famous beautiful site of Stork Island in the direction of becoming an aggregated tourism address, combine effective exploitation with environmental protection; and enhance promotion through various forms so that people in and outside the province would know and come to the tourism area, contributing to increasing locals' income.

Earlier, the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on November 15 organized an experimental tourism program with many attractive activities to promote community-based tourism potential and products in Chi Lang Nam to businesses in and outside the province.
