Acupuncture has drawn many patients to the Health Station of Doan Tung Commune
Thanh Mien District (Hai Duong) has been chosen as the sole locality in the country to pilot the model "Improving commune health stations’ treatment capability with acupuncture" by the Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management Department (Ministry of Health).
Since implementation, the model has been remarkably effective, contributing to raising the rate of examination and treatment with traditional medicine at commune level.
At present, acupuncture is being used to treat neurological, osteoarthritic, cerebral circulation, and many other chronic diseases with high efficiency, low costs, and few side effects.
Thanks to such advantages, the Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management Department, the National Hospital of Acupuncture, and the Health Department jointly conducted the model in Thanh Mien District in July 2017.
An acupuncture retraining course for grassroots medical staff were opened in August 2017 with about 50 trainees who were officials of commune and town health stations, clinics, health centers, and the district General Hospital under direct guidance of leading doctors and experts from the National Hospital of Acupuncture.
After having grasped basic theory, the trainees practiced right at the health stations under wholehearted guidance of the trainers.
Apart from professional training, the Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management Department also presented 38 electro-acupuncture machines, 38 infrared lamps, and acupuncture needles and paintings to 19 commune and town health stations in the district.
After nearly three months of learning and practice, the medical staff could employ acupuncture to cure patients at the health stations.
To date, four health stations, namely Doan Tung, Ngu Hung, Chi Lang Nam, and Cao Thang, have applied acupuncture to treatment. These commune health stations have lured numerous people coming for acupuncture with an average number of 180 patients/ month.
There are about 1,200 elderly people in Doan Tung Commune, 60 - 70% of them suffer from chronic diseases, resulting in great demands for medical examination and treatment.
Previously, Nguyen Trong Pho (79 years old) in Thuy Lam Hamlet usually had pains in his neck and shoulder and even could not shake or lower his head quite often. The pains greatly affected his life, making him frequently unable to eat and sleep.
Hearing about the commune health station's application of acupuncture, Pho came for treatment. After only a few days, his health markedly improved, osteoarthritic pains gradually disappeared, and he slept better and deeper.
"I found acupuncture at the health station very good, and patients can save lots of travel costs since they do not have to go to hospitals at higher levels," Pho joyfully said.
Since the application of acupuncture to examination and treatment, the Health Station of Ngu Hung Commune has attracted much more patients. Not only locals, patients from neighboring communes like Tu Cuong and Chi Lang Bac have also come for examination and treatment.
Doctor Pham Quang Vien, head of the commune Health Station, said that acupuncture could attract many patients thanks to its high efficiency, no use of drugs, fewer side effects than Western medicine, and low costs.
Acupuncture has contributed to increasing the rate of examination and treatment with traditional medicine at the health station from 20% to more than 30%.
From the effectiveness of acupuncture at the health stations of the above four communes, in the coming time, this method will be applied at all other commune and town health stations in Thanh Mien District. This is a specific deed in response to the Health Ministry's policy of turning to the grassroots level.
